CALLING ALL NEW MEXICO
WRITERS & ARTISTS

TRICKSTER 2025 will focus on work about “Movement”

Stop for a second and capture a moment of your life and picture it. What do you see? The wind flowing through the wind chimes that have hung on your porch your entire life, or that creaky old swing you loved as a child? Remember when you were watching the clock numbers change while laughing all night with a friend? Every memory, everything we see and do, every relationship we have, is infused with movement. We are moved physically and emotionally, and we move the world we live in.

Our tricksters can be based on our experiences! Here in the land of Enchantment, we have a lot of unique experiences with movement. Think of the cold air against the roar of the flames that lift our hot air balloons and burn our sorrows away through Zozobra. And how could you forget the car shows with our iconic local low-riders? Recall the bouncing bells on Powwow Regalia while our Native dancers match the rhythm of their feet to the beat of their drums. The tricksters in us and all around us are always in motion and are always inspiring us to create and expand on what we know.

Like our moving tricksters, we’re looking for work that moves, surprises us, and even changes shape before our eyes. We want what we aren't expecting. Let your thoughts flow like the Rio Grande and bring us with you!

SUBMISSION DEADLINE: MONDAY, MARCH 24, 2025

TRICKSTER  Submission Guidelines

Trickster is a literary journal published yearly by Northern New Mexico College and edited by students. We are looking for unpublished poetry, fiction, nonfiction, artwork and any combination therein. The landscape and cultures of northern New Mexico shape our perspective, but we are excited to accept original work relating to our current theme.

  • Prose should not exceed 5000 words.
  • Poetry submissions should be limited to 3-5 poems.
  • Multiple submissions (such as more than one poem or flash fiction piece) should be attached as one document.
  • Please attach your work as a .doc or .rtf file and email to trickster@nnmc.edu
  • Attach artwork to your email as a high resolution (300ppi) jpg, tif or pdf.
  • Include a 50-word bio, separately in third-person voice.
  • All pages should be numbered.
  • We read all submissions anonymously, so please include your name, address and email address only in the body of the email, in addition to the title of work(s). No identifying information should appear on the manuscript.
  • Simultaneous submissions accepted, but please let us know immediately if work is accepted elsewhere.
  • All contributors will receive one copy of the journal

Northern’s Department of Language and Letters released the first issue of Trickster in 2014, making the 2021 edition the sixth annual publication. The perspective of the journal is shaped by the landscape and cultures of northern New Mexico, but especially welcomes original work on the current theme. Submissions for Trickster are reviewed and selected by student editors with the guidance of faculty advisors. Publication of the journal is supported entirely by sales and community fundraising.
