In a remarkable collaboration between Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) and Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), the CHALLENGE TOMORROW event brought an exciting, hands-on STEM experience to over 200 middle and high school students in the Española area. Designed to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers, the event offered interactive learning stations, career insights, and the opportunity to explore cutting-edge science in a fun, engaging environment.
The highlight of the event was the arrival of two brightly colored CHALLENGE TOMORROW trailers, traveling exhibits brought by LANL to showcase a dynamic, immersive learning experience. Inside the trailers, students encountered a wide range of hands-on STEM activities, from exploring the mysteries of outer space to discovering the intricacies of material science, bioscience, and environmental protection. The trailers, which mirrored the real-life research environments of the Lab, allowed students to interact with science in a tangible and exciting way.
Each station was staffed by volunteer Challenge Ambassadors—scientists and professionals from Los Alamos National Laboratory—who guided the students through the various activities. These ambassadors not only provided technical guidance but also shared personal stories about their careers, offering insights into the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) from the perspective of those working on the frontlines of innovation. The one-on-one interactions between students and these professionals gave attendees a deeper understanding of how STEM can be applied in real-world careers, sparking interest in future job opportunities within New Mexico.
In addition to the interactive trailers, Northern New Mexico College faculty and staff provided presentations on NNMC’s academic programs, student services, and the various opportunities available at the College. Students learned about pathways to higher education in fields like engineering, biology, and computer science, opening doors to future studies and careers. This connection between STEM education and career exploration allowed students to envision futures that are both academically rewarding and professionally fulfilling—all within their local community.
“This event was designed not only to engage students in STEM but to show them the possibilities that exist right here in New Mexico,” said Ashley Duemmler, STEM Career Coordinator at Northern. “By partnering with Los Alamos National Laboratory, we’re able to give students hands-on access to the kinds of tools and technology that make science come alive. It’s about showing them that they can pursue these careers and make a real difference in the world.”
For many students, the day’s activities provided a first-time glimpse into the world of advanced science and technology. The opportunity to work directly with equipment and tools from LANL made the experience both engaging and educational. More importantly, it demonstrated that exciting and impactful careers in STEM are well within reach for students in New Mexico.
The event was made possible by the collaborative efforts of multiple teams from both institutions. Special recognition goes to LANL’s Challenge Ambassadors and the NNMC departments in STEM, Title III, Career Services, the Center for Teaching & Learning, Event staff, Northern faculty, Student Services, and Communications. Their dedication ensured that the event ran smoothly and that students were provided with a memorable and informative experience.
“CHALLENGE TOMORROW was a fantastic opportunity for our students to interact with professionals in STEM and explore career paths they might not have considered before,” said David Lindblom, Associate Professor, Film & Digital Media at Northern. “We hope this experience encourages more young people to pursue higher education and careers in science and technology, especially here in Northern New Mexico.”
As STEM industries continue to grow both in the state and across the country, programs like CHALLENGE TOMORROW play a critical role in inspiring the next generation of innovators, problem solvers, and thinkers. With events like this, Northern New Mexico College and Los Alamos National Laboratory are not only educating students but also helping to shape the future of STEM in the region.
As the day came to a close, many students expressed their excitement about what they had learned and experienced. For some, it was their first time engaging in STEM activities beyond the classroom, and the chance to interact directly with scientists from Los Alamos National Laboratory made the subjects feel more relevant and accessible. The event also served as a powerful reminder of the wealth of educational and professional opportunities available within their own community, highlighting Northern New Mexico as a hub for innovation and advancement.
Looking ahead, both Northern New Mexico College and Los Alamos National Laboratory plan to continue this partnership, with hopes to expand CHALLENGE TOMORROW to reach even more students in the region. By fostering interest in STEM from an early age, these institutions are helping to cultivate the next generation of scientists, engineers, and innovators who will carry New Mexico’s legacy of technological leadership into the future. Events like this not only inspire students today but also pave the way for a stronger, more vibrant local workforce in the years to come.
