Northern New Mexico College (NNMC) warmly welcomed the 2024 class of its College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) during a New Student Orientation held on July 31 and August 1. The event marked the beginning of a promising academic journey for the new Eagles, who were introduced to the wealth of resources and support available to them at NNMC.
NNMC President Hector Balderas delivered an inspirational keynote address, recounting his remarkable journey from growing up in the small town of Wagon Mound, New Mexico, to achieving significant professional milestones. Balderas shared his experiences of overcoming adversity in a community without a lawyer, eventually serving as a member of the New Mexico House of Representatives, the NM State Auditor, and the NM Attorney General before becoming the President of Northern New Mexico College. Balderas' story of perseverance and determination resonated deeply with the new students, serving as a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through hard work and dedication. He encouraged the students to take full advantage of the opportunities available to them and to remain steadfast in their pursuit of success.
The College Assistance Migrant Program (CAMP) at NNMC is a federally funded initiative designed to support students from migrant and seasonal farmworker backgrounds during their critical first year of college. CAMP offers a comprehensive range of services, including academic advising, tutoring, financial assistance, and personal development workshops. These resources aim to ensure students have the support they need to succeed in their higher education journey. CAMP plays a vital role in helping students transition smoothly from high school to college, providing tailored guidance and support to address their unique challenges and experiences. By focusing on the first year, CAMP helps lay a solid foundation for ongoing academic success and personal growth.
During the orientation, staff members introduced the new students to the extensive resources available at NNMC. These include academic advising, tutoring services, financial aid assistance, and a variety of extracurricular activities. The college is committed to providing comprehensive support to help students thrive both academically and personally. Students were informed about the various academic programs, student organizations, and support services available to them. They were encouraged to engage with the campus community, develop leadership skills, and build meaningful connections that would enhance their college experience.
The orientation concluded with a warm welcome to the new Eagles, setting a positive and enthusiastic tone for the academic year ahead. The event highlighted the supportive and inclusive environment at NNMC, ensuring that each student feels valued and empowered to achieve their goals. As the new students embark on their academic journeys, they carry with them the inspiration from President Balderas’ story and the unwavering support of the NNMC community.
Welcome, Eagles!
